Rodolfo Abrantes - Raimundos - Bonita♫

I have no doubt that Artificial Intelligence is here to stay and that there is not much that can be done to slow down this new trend. In some contexts, there will certainly continue to be appreciation for handmade work, but as a digital illustrator, this is not a practice that I have or usually apply.

However, for the advertising market, things may change forever for illustrators, as the process of creating images becomes easier, faster, and cheaper, despite all the controversies surrounding copyright.

But it's not about any of these controversies that I actually want to talk about, but rather about the use of these new tools like Midjourney, ChatGPT, among others. I have used them myself and will possibly continue to use them when appropriate. However, I realized that when using them, I feel deep down that it's not exactly about creating new things, but the opposite: it's about NOT creating.

As fantastic as a text produced by ChatGPT may be for you, you don't always know what to expect. The same goes for images—you may have an idea of what you want but (still) lack control over the composition and deliberate choices that writers or illustrators usually make in such cases.

Rafael Malenotti - Acústicos e Valvulados - Fim de Tarde com você♫

My favorite music genre has always been punk rock, and its motto "Do It Yourself" has always resonated with me. Due to this motto, which is in total misalignment with these new technologies, I decided (as always) to do it myself. However, foreseeing that it will become increasingly difficult to achieve the perfection proposed by AIs, I decided to reconsider personal references and embrace the imperfections in my original works experimentally. That's how the illustrations in this post came about, with a lot of influence from music, a bit of comics, and many textures, halftones, chromatic aberrations, and whatever else came to mind.

Interestingly, there's a touch of Frank Miller, whose illustrations I had never been a particularly big fan of, even hating some phases of his art. However, I finally understand an expressiveness that AIs might take a while to demonstrate. I may continue this series because there are still many songs by various artists that I would like to portray, and I think this format suits it best. The next ones will probably be posted only on Instagram, which you can follow here if you want.
